Remote astrophotography

As technology makes it possible and increasingly accessible, more and more astrophotographers turn to remote hosting facilities to take their craft to the next level. Pristine skies, good probabilility of clear weather, and the convenience of not leaving your home make remote imaging an interesting prospect for many of us.

Alnitak offers remote access to the 0.43 m Dall-Kirkham telescope in the observatory at the southern edge of Sierra de Segura mountain range in Spain, at the elevation of 1,650 m. The telescope is dual-optimized for scientific imaging and deep sky astrophotography purposes and offers a full set of Chroma LRGB, narrowband and photometric filters. The 60-Megapixel back-illuminated CMOS sensor installed features very high quantum efficiency level peaking above 87%.

The telescope is available without monthly subscription fees and is billed for the imaging time only, making it highly suitable for deep sky astrophotography projects of any duration, time-resolved photometry, astrometry, minor planet searches, monitoring, and many other astronomical tasks.

The Alnitak ARTA program provides free telescope access for students, professional researchers and astronomy amateurs for educational and scientific purposes.

AstroCamp is located in an ideal area for astronomical observation, on high peaks in Nerpio, Albatece, Spain. Nerpio is in Southeastern Spain, surrounded by the mountain ranges in Granada and Murcia and the famous Cazorla National Park, largest in Spain and second in Europe.

The site is equipped with everything necessary to host robotic telescopes to be used remotely via Internet.

Our observatory is located in the Atlas Mountains in Morocco and hosted at OUCA (Observatoire Universitaire Cadi Ayyad) with which we are in partnership. The site was previously shortlisted by the European Southern Observatory (ESO) for the Very Large Telescope (VLT) project, making it an ideal location for stargazing and astronomical research. The observatory is located in the future biggest dark sky reserve in the world, which is bigger than the Mont-Mégantic reserve. The site benefits from about 250 clear nights per year with a median seeing of 0.84 arcseconds and it is located in a Bortle 1 area. We are also the highest remote observatory in altitude open to amateur in the world (2800 m), and that gives us the best sky in the north hemisphere open to amateur astronomers.

We are located at an about 3-hour flight from major European capitals and 1h 30 from the Marrakech international airport. We have a fiber internet link of about 100 Mbps.

We share our location with professional telescopes like Trappist North, Korea Space Agency and MOSS. We are open to amateur astronomers that would like to be remotely installed in a professional class observatory and who want to be involved in Pro-Am research collaboration. Astrophotographers are of course welcome as well .

We host our own team who include StDr and Apoteam famous for many discoveries including the recent M31 OIII emission arc.

Joining us is not only joining a remote facility, but also (if you want) joining a team focused in science and research.

Since founding Sierra Remote Observatories (SRO) in 2007, we have been striving to make it the premiere destination for automated astronomical data collection and imaging, satellite  tracking, and space communication.

After an exhaustive search, we chose our site for its unique combination exceptional seeing, darkness, mild weather, and unique accessibility.

At SRO we offer fiber optic internet with 1 Gbps (full duplex), with higher speeds and dedicated fiber available. All critical systems are redundant with Starlink internet backup, on-site industrial generator and dual encrypted/secure VPN.

We have 1 arcsecond seeing, with sub-arcsecond seeing following astronomical twilight. SRO has 290 clear days per year, wind speeds of only 1 mph, very dark skies (>21.80 SQM), no summer monsoons, and rare thunderstorms. Our location in the Sierra Nevada Mountains at 4610 feet keeps us above the central valley inversion zone without being so high as to incur brutal winter conditions. We are accessible all year round, being only one hour by car from the Fresno-Yosemite International Airport.

We have full time 24/7 technical support with an on-site machine shop. Most repairs are performed on-site and we can ship more complicated issues within 24 hours, reassembling your telescope upon their return.  Technical support is provided 365 days/year and the owner lives on site.

Remote Skygems is a fully automated, remote imaging solution that maximises the light-collecting capability of its world-class optical and hardware systems by using every minute of available clear sky. With locations in Namibia and Spain, you are able to image objects from both hemispheres. As we are amateur astrophotographers ourselves, we thought it a high priority to offer this service as competitively priced as possible, so that rates start at around 9 Euro per imaging hour during full moons!
